Honoring the Teacher

Sometimes after I teach a yoga class, students will come up to me and ask where did I learn the philosophical teachings I’ve presented or they will comment on my attitude or how I relate to the world.

I have been extremely blessed to have wonderful teachers in my life. In  1983 I had the good fortune to meet and receive initiation from a spiritual master who awakened my meditation energy . The wisdom of this lineage of masters has supported and sustained me for these past 28 years. Since 1983 I had had a rather casual relationship with the practice of hatha yoga, practicing on and off, but never really committing to a regular schedule. For my 47th birthday my friend who is a hatha yoga teacher gave me a private yoga class which was a combination of an active and a restorative practice. I had a very deep experience and felt a lovely connection inside and I asked myself  “Why am I not doing this all the time?” Right around that time this same teacher started teaching twice a week nearer to my home and my love of yoga was truly born. I had already been studying the yogic philosophies and had been practicing meditation for about 17 years, but it took me a while to begin to really integrate the physical practice and the deep inner wisdom.

This is the reason I was drawn to Anusara, because of the joining of heart based themes and yogic wisdom with highly refined biomechanic alignments.

I read books on yogic philosophy written by my spiritual teacher as well as other great yogis and attend workshops with Carlos Pomeda to deepen my understanding. And right now my biggest support is a correspondence course that I receive twice a month via e-mail titled “Living in the Truth of the Present Moment.” It is a wonderful resource and a kind of operating manual to live an awakened joyful life. If you would like to get a feel for the course you can go to Truth of the Present Moment.
